Except for Bud Bonker the petty thief, Dorian, the eight year old orphan boy has no one else to care for him. After the death of his parents, Dorian has had no choice but to work for Robert the local rich man who owns just about every business in the village. Robert is nothing but an absolute crook who despises children and who disregards even the slightest inclination towards morality. Almost all the village fears Robert either on account of his money or perhaps his belligerent nature. Dorian fears him even more because the kind of cruelty and abuse Robert commits is too much for an eight year old child. The only person who defies Robert is his wife Martha. Strangely enough, he trembles at her mere sight. But all Martha cares for is only about herself and her son Davy.
Every time Bud finds Dorian sulking or occasionally weeping, he gets an urge to dash to Robert and bash him up for treating an unfortunate child so pathetically. But the fact that he is not cut out for anything like that hardly lets him move a limb, so he tries to cheer up Dorian instead.
Mean while in the nearby town, Bud’s best buddy Ted Winkle, a little more serious thief than his friend back in the village and who is presently serving his time in prison manages to escape in the middle of a night. He gets hold of a pick-up truck and heads straight for Bud.
Bud gets a little nervous about his friend’s jail break at first, but as soon as some of Ted’s confident and cheerful attitude rubs of a little on himself, he relaxes. For Dorian, Ted’s recklessness and foolhardiness look strikingly new as opposed to the gentle and cautious nature of Bud and he can’t help but admire Ted for that.
Once Ted comes to know what Dorian is being treated like by his savage boss, he not only sketches out a plan to avenge his little friend but also successfully executes it by making Robert an idiot in front of his wife Martha. Not just that but he also personally warns him to keep off from ill-treating Dorian any more. Robert not being used to such retaliation is literally stunned by this new comer’s aggressiveness.
William, a wealthy businessman in town has for a long time wanted to buy a farm house so spend vacations with his family. So he visits the village along with his wife Caroline and daughter Violet to take a look at Martha’s farm house and buy it out immediately if found suitable. Robert had already promised William to keep it ready for inspection but in fact he is nowhere near to standing on his word.
The farm house put up for sale is Martha’s inheritance from her parents and she has been nagging Robert for a long time now to sell if off for a handsome price. According to her, she had already given her clumsy, good for nothing husband more than enough chances to sell it and this time, William had offered a good sum provided the structure looked good, so he better do or die because this is going to be his last chance. Robert is pretty much aware of his position because in its present state he knows only too well that no one with a sane mind would like to even take a second look at his wife’s farm house which is in utter shambles.
